School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY)

The North, South and West junior highs each have access to School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY) which involves Retired Police Officers and/or Social workers.

The STAY role involves:

  • Educating, mentoring, and empowering students through presentations regarding daily issues such as substance abuse, bullying, role of a bystander, cyber issues, sexual harassment, proactive vs. reactive behavior, crime, personal and community safety, goal setting for success.
  • Educating and mentoring parents on the realities their children face each day by raising parent awareness on these issues, teaching strategies that help parents monitor their children, providing parents with contacts and resources for their children.
  • Educating and mentoring staff on the realities that students face each day by raising awareness on these issues, educating about the signs and symptoms of substance and abuse, being accessible as a resource person for school staff.
  • Working in partnership with the principal of the school to develop action plans for safety and health of all students, be present at the site, and be available as a resource person for strategies to deal with the issues facing adolescents.
  • Partnering with their area team (North, West or South) made up of principals, high school SRO (School Resource Officer) and a City Police representative that meet monthly to identify the needs of the schools to enhance student wellness and positive life choices. 

Stay Advisors work one day a week in our junior high schools making a difference in the lives of our at-risk youth by encouraging them to “STAY in school”.  The STAY teams work hard to make a difference in the lives of our at-risk youth.
